Characters are crushed, blown up, flattened, banged, burned, and bounced -- all in good, Chuck-Jones-influenced fun. Animal protagonists steal food from each other and from unsympathetic humans. When a raccoon steals a bear's winter stash of food, the bear threatens retaliation and the raccoon fools other "foragers" into stealing food from humans to repay the bear and save himself. Younger kids will laugh at the obvious stuff and won't get the edgier humor aimed at older audiences, so this is one that several age groups can enjoy together.
While this movie doesn't have the depth of Finding Nemo or Shrek, it was a very fun and well done animation by Dreamworks. The animation was first rate, and the animals were very fun to watch. What I enjoyed the most about this movie is the social commentary they presented. It's nothing serious, but it shows us how gluttonous many of us "humans" have become.
While many of the human characters are exaggerations, there's quite a bit of truth behind each caricature. She was so overdone (yet so realistic!) that I wasn't sure if I was laughing because it was so true to life, or if it was just so out there. Such is the case with the story of a hibernating family of animals who awakes to find that their home-sweet-forest has being transformed into a concrete jungle of suburbia almost overnight. Led by the wise, but extremely mild mannered turtle Verne, voiced by Gary Shandling, this group of foragers have long been comfortable in their routine of gathering food for winter. Now you may be saying to yourself as you sit down to decide whether to see this film or see The Da Vinci Code for the third time, "Haven't I seen this story before? " The answer is most likely a yes, as the story is not incredibly unique.
But never fear, for this film has so much more to offer than a story. The dynamic on screen between Verne and RJ is absolutely hysterical, due to the unseen chemistry between Shandling and Willis. They continually battle back and forth with a whirlwind of sarcastic disdain that ads a uniquely adult feel to the film, but they keep it clean enough so that the kids can laugh too. And on top of that, the other characters in the film are delightfully endearing and fun to watch. I found myself laughing out loud to the point where I was embarrassing the friends whom I had dragged along with me to the theater. RJ, an opportunistic raccoon, accidentally takes food from a hungry bear and needs to replace it ASAP. To pull it off, he enlists the help of an animal family and urges them to invade the new suburban sprawl that popped up while they were hibernating. Too bad there's an exterminator determined to hunt them down. When the winter ends and the spring comes back, Verne the turtle and his friends wake up from their hibernation and find that there is a huge green hedge has been built around their habitat, which creates the shortage of food for the animals.
RJ the raccoon, who is in debt a large amount of food to Vincent the bear, convinces that there is a great source of human's food over the hedge. All the animals believe his word without knowing that RJ only have 1 week to pay the debt, or else, he has to pay by his own life. RJ uses the opportunity to introduce himself to the group and explain that they could have better food by scavenging off the humans. On the Platte River each spring we deerwalk out into starry night. We move through night immersed in chortling sax throaty love songs, those warrior guard birds, the sandhill cranes, standing in shallows far from predator reach. By the time the first deer comes to river, predawn, to begin mitigated maze of day, scout cranes have already checked nearby fields for plenty, for corn stubble, GMO King corn, corn replacing traditional diets of snail, but tasty all the same. They've come to alert their clan, to cry news to the rivered camp. Some crane, already positioned up on a shallow sandbar, will decide itself leader and simply lean toward the direction they've been summoned to, hold its lean there. If the others trust this leadership, they too will lean behind it in the same direction until together they will lift, and if all has been quiet until this point, and no danger realized, they will seem a huge cloud of chortling cheers, nearly sounding like a stadium crowd at tremendous point gain.
A final raid planned by RJ before Vincent's deadline involves invading Gladys' home, which requires someone to distract her pet Persian cat Tiger; Stella is quickly groomed to look like a cat to draw Tiger's attention away. Though they are able to collect most of the food in the kitchen, RJ inadvertently reveals the truth to Verne as he tries to get a can of Spuddies (which are Vincent's favorites). During their argument, the animals are soon discovered by Gladys and Dwayne; though RJ gets away, the other animals are all captured. However, he joins their family after he falls in love with Stella. RJ presents the food to Vincent, but as he sees the exterminator truck driving off, he realizes that the family he found in the woodland animals is the most valuable thing in his life. RJ sends the food wagon careening into the truck, knocking out Dwayne and freeing the animals. Spike, Bucky and Quillo take control of the truck and drive it back home, and RJ rejoins the family as they try to shake off the pursuing Vincent. They crash the truck into Gladys' home and return to the hedge, but are attacked from both sides of it by Vincent, Gladys and Dwayne. RJ gives Hammy an energy drink, making the squirrel hyperactive enough to move at warp speed which he uses to go and reactivate the De-Pelter Turbo.
RJ lures Vincent into leaping over the hedge to get him, but puts on Verne's shell which protects him from Vincent's jaws and allows Verne to pull him out with a fishing line. Vincent, Gladys and Dwayne are caught in the De-Pelter Turbo, resulting in them being blasted with radiation and trapped in a cage left in the ensuing crater. Verne apologizes to RJ for his actions and reconciles with the other animals. On the night before Vincent's hibernation ends, RJ sees that Gladys has bought a massive stockpile of food for an upcoming party and enlists the help of the animals to invade her home and steal it.
Hammy successfully disables the De-Pelter Turbo while Stella poses as a cat to seduce Gladys' Persian cat Tiger in order to steal his collar, which enables entry into the house's pet door. The animals stockpile another wagon full of food, but right as they are about to leave at sunrise, RJ sees a can of chips called Spuddies and becomes determined to get them as Vincent specifically requested them. While trying to justify his effort to get the chips, RJ lets slip his true intention for the food. Gladys comes downstairs and finds the animals, and RJ manages to escape with the food. The others are caught by Dwayne, who takes them away in his truck to euthanize them.
